Saxkartel is a highly original saxophone quartet from Belgium, and the brainchild of saxophonist/composer Tom Van Dyck. The project has a long history with a few albums and and a major prize under its belt. After a long hibernation, here’s version 2.0 with a fresh line-up and new original compositions. Plenty of colours and grooves, without a rhythm section, and a lot of charismatic solo contributions of all four members. Challenging like a real jazz band yet accessible like a string quartet, this ensemble assumes a special place in the contemporary musical landscape. Music worth (re)discovering.
